The aurora is visible in Iceland from roughly late August to mid-April, whenever the sky is dark and clear. The season is not the constraint. Cloud is.
What the numbers mean
The KP index measures geomagnetic activity from 0 to 9. In Iceland you are already far enough north that KP 2 is enough for a decent display overhead. Chasing a high KP number is a distraction; a KP 5 night under solid cloud shows you nothing, and a KP 2 night under clear sky can be extraordinary.
The forecast that matters is the cloud cover map on vedur.is. It shows green (clear) and white (cloud) across the country in three-hour steps. Your job is to find green, and be willing to drive an hour to reach it.
Where to base yourself
Reykjavík is convenient and light-polluted; you can still see strong displays from the harbour, but weak ones vanish. Thirty minutes out — Þingvellir, the Reykjanes peninsula, Hvalfjörður — puts you in proper darkness.
For a dedicated aurora trip, the north around Mývatn and Akureyri statistically has clearer winter skies than the south coast, which catches Atlantic weather first.
Camera settings that work
Start here and adjust:
- Manual mode, RAW
- Aperture as wide as the lens allows (f/1.8–f/2.8)
- ISO 1600–3200
- Shutter 3–8 seconds for a bright, moving aurora; 10–20 for a faint one
- Focus manually on a distant light, then tape the focus ring
- Tripod, and a remote or two-second timer
Modern phones with a night mode genuinely work now, particularly braced on a wall or a small tripod.
Managing expectations
Roughly one clear night in three during the season is the average people report. On a five-night trip, most see something; a minority see nothing. Book a trip you would enjoy without the aurora, and treat the lights as a bonus rather than an itinerary item.
