Travelling in Summer

Long days, high passes, and the crowds that come with school holidays

The only season when high-altitude routes are reliably open, and the worst season to be in a Mediterranean or South Asian city. Summer is when the mountains repay you and the plains punish you — Ladakh, the Karakoram, the Alps and Iceland's interior all open now, while Rajasthan, Kyūshū and southern Europe run to temperatures that make midday sightseeing genuinely unwise.
