A walled medina with the Atlas on the horizon
The overview
Marrakech works best as a base rather than a checklist: three days inside the walls, then out to the mountains, the coast or the desert.
The medina is a thousand years old and still organised by trade — dyers in one lane, metalworkers in the next, a leather souk that announces itself before you see it. It can be overwhelming on day one and entirely navigable by day three, once you learn that every lane eventually returns to a main artery. Beyond the walls, Guéliz is the twentieth-century city with wide streets and modern restaurants, and the High Atlas begins less than an hour's drive south. Most first-time visitors under-plan the escape: the Ourika valley, Imlil and the Agafay stone desert are all day trips, and the Sahara dunes are a two-day drive each way, not an afternoon.

What to do
01
Walk from the spice square to the dyers' lane to the leather souk; the smell and sound tell you where you are.
02
Half-day classes usually start with the market, which is the more useful half.
03
Ninety minutes south for walnut groves, terraced fields and a walk to a Berber village with a local guide.
04
Not the Sahara, but a genuine stone desert forty minutes out, good for a sunset without a two-day drive.
A suggested route
A structure that works, not a schedule to follow to the minute. Move the days around to suit the weather.
Day 1
Koutoubia, Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, then let yourself get lost in the souks before dark.
Day 2
Le Jardin Secret in the morning, Majorelle midday, hammam late afternoon, rooftop dinner.
Day 3
Imlil or the Ourika valley with a local guide, back for Jemaa el-Fna at night.
What to eat
Tanjia
Marrakech's own slow-cooked meat dish, sealed in a clay urn and cooked in the ashes of a bathhouse furnace.
Harira
Tomato, lentil and chickpea soup eaten year-round and especially at sunset in Ramadan.
Msemen
Layered, pan-fried flatbread from a street griddle, best with honey and mint tea.
