Pakistan's northern permit boundaries continue to shift
Most of Gilgit-Baltistan — Hunza, Gilgit, Skardu and the Karakoram Highway to the Chinese border — remains open without a special permit. Areas near the Line of Control, parts of the Afghan border region and certain trekking zones still require a No Objection Certificate, and the boundaries are administrative rather than geographic, so a route open last season may not be this one.
